How to put the creative back in marketing

" Do you ever have one of those mornings when you wake up just brimming with ideas? Well, that was me this morning. Except, not with ideas for paintings or illustrations, but with ideas for business.
All too often, artists and designers aren't given enough credit for being good business people- but I'm going to call bullshit on that. Dreaming up ways to expand and elevate what you do,'s all CREATIVE. Embrace it, and don't let anyone tell you any different. "Every entrepreneur is an artist and every artist is an entrepreneur.""

I posted the above image and caption on instagram recently, and a whole lot of artists and designers chimed in with a big ol "Heck Yeah!" It's time we all stop participating in the limiting self talk we have around marketing, and embrace it for the juicy, creative pursuit that it is. (Yes! Marketing CAN be creative.)

This is a big reason why I'm tuning in to April Bowles-Olin's upcoming Creative Live course "Double your Followers with Creative Marketing." (And you should too!) When April asked what my most successful marketing strategy was to date, I had to think for a moment. And then I realized, my most popular strategy has been one that didn't even start out as one. My current instagram project: #100daysofplantsandpots. The project started as a way to create a morning painting habit (it has) but it's turned into so much more. I've gained so many followers on Instagram from it- not realizing how fun and inspiring it is for other people to watch my progress and growth. I've been featured on multiple high profile feeds, connected with other makers, art directors, and bloggers, currated a slew of new art prints from the project for my shop, and may even have a few pieces already lined up to license onto product. So yeah, I'm a BIG fan of creative projects now. And honestly, the opportunity to leverage these same projects for marketing purposes is endless. Even after I'm finished with the 100 days, I know I'll be pitching the work to bloggers, manufacturers and editors.

And here's a little secret too- I waited SO LONG to start a project like this. I've been wanting to do something like this for years. YEARS! I realized after I started that the public accountability from social media was a great motivator. Maybe it will be for you too. Maybe you don't need that. Whatever the case, don't wait like I did. Pick something today- even if it's small- and just get started!
