I'm constantly looking around for mentors. People that inspire me + give me things to immulate. Most of these mentors I will never meet. That's the beauty and the curse of this internet age we live in.
When I discovered the work of Marthe Armitage, I about fell out of my chair. In a word: Divine. But wait, there's more. She draws and carves her pattern repeats by hand, and then hand prints all of her wallpapers. You can see her in action in this short film.
Her designs are both timeless and effortlessly modern at the same time, and I could get lost in her intricate repeats for days on end.
Of course she inspires me because her work is gorgeous. But she also got her start later in life. Stealing away a few hours here and there to work while raising her children. And she didn't receive wide acclaim until she was in her 70's. Imagine that- in this world where we think we're washed up if we haven't found our internet fame by age 25. Martha could tell you a different story.
