One of my favorite life giving drinks is turmeric and ginger tea. Whenever I see fresh turmeric root at the store (usually someplace like Whole Foods or Sprout's), I grab a handful and brew up fresh batches daily. Turmeric and ginger have broad antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, and studies have shown turmeric is great for heart and brain health too. Sign me up! AND...it couldn't be easier to make.
I start by grating equal parts turmeric and ginger root with my micro-plane grater. It's not an exact science- generally, I use about 3-4 tbls each for a small pot of tea.
Add the grated ginger and turmeric to hot water and steep for 5-6 minutes. I love using my Bodum tea pot for brewing so I don't have to strain after brewing.
After steeping for a few minutes, squeeze some lemon into the pot. (Depending on the juiciness of the lemon, I use 1/2- 1 lemon.) This part reminds me of a science experiment because the color changes from a deep orange to a bright sunshine yellow once the lemon is added.
If you like your tea sweet, you can also add a tablespoon or two of honey at this point. That's it! It's also refreshing if you let it cool and drink over ice too.
And one last note- turmeric does stain, so be careful where you grate/chop it, and be sure to wipe it up right away. (Especially on white or porous surfaces.)
